Safeguarding Andaman flora: new plant biorepository strengthens global genome conservation

Highlights

  • First plant biorepository established for the Andaman Islands under the GGI-Gardens programme.
  • Collection includes 45 species from 44 genera and 33 families, exceeding project targets.
  • Eleven threatened species, including Cycas zeylanica and Bentinckia nicobarica, are safeguarded.
  • Over half of the genera collected are new to the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN).
  • Strengthens global genomic conservation capacity while addressing urgent regional threats.
